Bold New move for EA
The ever popular Battlefield series is set to arrive to video game enthusiasts as a free download thanks to a bold new move from EA which has set the online gaming community on fire. In what can be seen as a very significant move from Electronic Arts, the next instalment of Battle field will be used to test the water in what EA are calling Play 4 Free. EA will unveil its plans for the play 4 free model at the Digital, Life, Design Conference being held in Munich this week. Heroes will be EA’s first “First Person Shooter” venture into the world of web-focused free to download games. Rather than sold at retail, the game aims to make money through advertising and it is hoped that it will encourage players to purchase in-game items that can then be used to enhance the game play experience (mainly in the guise of character customisation). A previous experiment in 2006 from EA involving free online games in South Korea introduced a free version of its FIFA soccer game. This generated more than US $1 million in monthly in-game sales. A PC edition of Battlefield Heroes is scheduled for released this summer as EA find out first hand the dependability of ad-supported free online games. www.pconlinegaming.co.uk
